Latvia's eight-digit number ranges: what a prefix means

Latvia's standard eight-digit ranges are 2 (mobile), 6 (fixed), 70/71 (IoT/M2M), 78 (other paid services), 80 (freephone), 81 (shared cost) and 90 (premium-rate services). The old “2 or 6” rule of thumb is therefore incomplete.

What a prefix cannot prove

• A standard range does not verify the caller's identity or guarantee a safe call.
• Caller ID can be spoofed, so a genuine organisation's number may appear on screen.
• Fraud signals come from behaviour — pressure, requests for secret codes or payment — not from a prefix alone.

How to verify a caller

If someone claims to represent a bank, the police or a company, end the call and contact the organisation yourself using the number on its official website. Never disclose Smart-ID PINs, passwords or card details.
