The “2 or 6” rule: how to spot a spoofed number
Updated: June 2026
A genuine Latvian phone number has 8 digits and starts with 2 (mobile) or 6 (landline). A +371 number that does not start with 2 or 6 is often faked by scammers using caller ID spoofing.
Other red flags
- 110 or 112 showing up as the caller — the police and emergency services never call from these numbers.
- Foreign numbers disguised as local ones.
- Pressure to act fast and requests for personal information.
