The +44 calling code: what to check before calling back
UK number formats, checking an unfamiliar call and callback charges for people in Latvia.
What does the +44 calling code mean?
The +44 code belongs to UK numbering. It does not automatically mean a fraudulent call: the caller could be a relative, a business contact or a company whose services you use.
The code does not prove the caller’s location or identity either. A number can be used outside its country, and the details shown on the call screen can be spoofed. Assess the conversation as well as the digits.

+44, 0044 and domestic notation
For someone calling from Latvia, a plus sign and the international dialling prefix 00 are two ways to start international notation. +44 and 0044 do not represent different countries. You can ignore spaces when comparing contacts, but must keep every digit.
The initial 0 in a UK domestic number is replaced by +44 in international notation. Do not keep that zero while adding +44 before the whole domestic number. In a number starting +447, the country code is +44 and the 7 begins the next part.
Checking a missed call
Consider whether you expect a UK call, perhaps about a booking or order. Then compare the entire number with the organisation’s official contact page. A match in the first few digits is not enough.
Do not call back simply because a call was brief or repeated. Ofcom advises caution with unexpected calls and messages. If someone claims to represent a familiar business, find its contact details independently of the information they provide.
How much does a callback cost?
The country code alone is not enough to establish a reliable price. Charges depend on your operator, plan and the type of number. Check calls from Latvia to the UK, including any exceptions for special numbers.
A roaming bundle for travel does not automatically mean free international calls from Latvia. If the price list is unclear, ask your operator about the full number before calling. There is no universal price in this guide because it would not apply to every reader.
When the conversation seems suspicious
End the call if someone requests your online banking password or approval of an action you did not start. Contact your bank or the organisation using details you find independently. If you have already shared card details or approved a payment, tell your bank immediately.
Residents of Latvia should report possible crimes to the Latvian police and suspicious links or digital incidents to CERT.LV. UK reporting channels should not automatically be treated as services provided by Latvian operators.
Can a directory identify the owner?
A country code and online reports do not reliably identify a particular person. A published company contact is useful for comparison but does not authenticate an incoming call. Describe your experience in a report rather than guessing the owner’s identity.
This guide is for people in Latvia receiving +44 calls. Our phone search focuses on the Baltics; this article does not mean we provide a complete UK number directory.
Did you get a call from an unfamiliar number?
See what information is available about the number. Caller ID can be spoofed; an absence of reports does not prove a call is safe.
